Thanks for the helpfully pics..saved me some money!
Just wondering though..I got a 99 1.6 corsa sport and even though I keep adjusting the clutch cable like your diagrams (normally once a week) the low gears (1,2 and reverse) gradually become harder to engage until I have to turn off the engine, put it in gear, then start it again. At that point I have to tighten the clutch again! I'm fast running out of adjustment and was wondering if anyone can shed any light on the problem? Surely it can't need a new clutch as it isnt slipping at all. I've read some places that the gear linkage is rubbish on these models..any suggestions?! Thanks! Mark |

Excellent tutorial, I can now fix the clutch on my daughter's ancient machine. However, it has been done before by at least two trained mechanics and it still eventually slips back to problem mode. I read the suggestion that one should put a locknut of some description on it to prevent it slipping back and that seems sensible but why should the dam thing slip back anyway? It doesn't make sense to me but many things I have seen on cars over the years seem to fit into that category, are there no decent design engineers anymore? I worked for an American engineering company for many years, albeit as an accountant. Whenever something went badly wrong, the VP would call a meeting and start with the question: "Gentlemen, what do we need to do to prevent this happening again?" He was right and I learned much from his approach; can't lend him to Vauxhall however because he is no longer with us sadly.

as it sounds a bit like the problem mine had, be careful if you do adjust the selector as the pin in the selector housin on some gear boxes is metal,(nylon in later models) and they can shear off as mine did, my dad had to replace the gear selector housing (not a good idea in freezing weather, ) at the same time the gear linkage was replaced as it was ****ed, replacin the gear linkage is a bit of a pain and it is a good idea to support the engine while doing it Last edited by Sherbert; 07-01-2009 at 10:54 AM.. |

Hey there, great guide.
Just a quick question though, I don't suppose anyone knows the thread size of that bar? (have a corsa B) I'd like to put a nylon nut on the end of it to stop my clutch cable from slipping, the actual cable is in good condition but the plastic thread seems to have worn so much that i'm having to adjust it every week/two weeks. Don't really want to fork out for a new cable as it's in good order, no signs of corrosion so this seems like a nice simple fix to me |

I see that most people say their clutches 'slip' to the point that they cant get it into gear i.e. biting point gets lower.
I seem to have to opposite problem... my biting point is getting slightly higher... is this possible, or is it the clutch on its way out? If an adjustment will fix it, how do I do this on a 1.4 16V? (the diff between my engine bay and the one at the beginning of the tutorial is that I have a SAIP... which masks the clutch cable.) |

Sorry can't help you c150 although it may well be that your clutch plates are getting a little worn - have you done more than 120k miles?
Note for other readers: I finally decided to scratch around in my junk boxes and found one of those anti-slip nuts with a nylon collar which are made to stop the nut from slipping on the thread. I have screwed it all the way onto the bolt so that it sits immediately behind the U nut which engages the clutch lever. So far so good i.e., the amount of pedal travel before the clutch bites is staying put! |
