Corsa C Speedo/Steering Assist Problem

Hi,

Registered because my girlfriend is having problems with her Corsa.

Its a 2002 1.0L 3 door hatchback.

On the way home last night the speedometer started to intermitently stop working and fall to 0mph and the steering feels light (lack of assistance).

I've taken it for a short drive and when the two problems happen at the same time; when the speedometer stops working the steering does too, when the speedometer then starts to work the steering assistance does too.

While out on my little drive the 'Engine/transmission electronics' light on the dash came on - when it did the speedo & steering assistance died completely. Then all of a sudden it started working pefectly for 1/2 mile (no light, speedometer working & steering assisted), then it went back to intermitent and then the light came back on (speedometer & steering assist completely dead).

I've looked around a few forums but seems to be answers for different models or some things that dont fit. The reverse lighs still work ok, as does I think the cigarette lighter.

I've done the pedal trick to get the code: P0500 which I'm led to believe by ther Forums is: P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction.

Someone else has suggested that it might be the plug in the back of the dash?

Is there any way I can pinpoint/test the problem to prove its the dash and not a sensor/faulty wiring somewhere else?

Any bright idea's are welcomed

I'm off to search the tutorial section to see if there's a useful guide on how to remove the instruments panel...

Cheers,

Just an afterthought - if it was this plug in the back of the panel then surely I would lose all connection to the panel and the rev counter, warning light etc wouldn't work?

The rev counter still works, as do the warning lights etc.

What other faults could relay to the P0500?

Vehicle speed sensor at the wheel?
Hall Sensor in the gearbox?
