... is this typically the rear lower gearbox mount breaking?

Is it a common fault?

It can be but it's not typical. Quite a few judder. Is it all the time or mainly first thing and when moving off from statioady?

It's only in first gear, moving off from stationary

If it does it more when starting from cold then it's possibly more to do with contamination of the clutch plate - eg oil.

Smaller engined cars tend to this more when driven by someone used to bigger engines simply because they haven't got the same torque - sometimes it's as much to do with driving style as any inherent fault with the car.

That makes sense, although my girlfriend also has a 1.2 Corsa C and I can drive that fine.
