I have a 1999 Corsa which recently has developed a couple of problems. Initially it started to 'pink' a little now it randomly fails to respond to throttle. It doesn't cut out it just randomly does not rev but recovers after a few seconds just enough to give you a heart attack if crossing a major road!! We haven't noticed an engine management light though. No popping or banging precedes or follows this fault.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

egr valve??? mine was like this til i had that replaced and the airflow meter.

Hi , I have the same problem; - and many Hungarian owners-

1.Airflow meter
2.Lamda sensor
3.EGR



I have changed :
Airflow meter
Lamda sensor

so next --EGR = cca. 300 € in Hungary

Does anyone suspect the throttle position sensor?

the symptoms you describe sound like EGR valve and airflow meter. have a look on ebay for them, should be pretty cheap

You can always try cleaning the EGR valve before buying a new one.

I know you haven't seen the eml come on - but it's worth doing the paper clip test just to make sure there's no codes in there. If there are it will give you a pointer in the right direction rather than just randomly changing bits and pieces.

The pinking you mentioned is perhaps an indication of a problem with the lambda sensor - or a vacuum leak on the intake side of things. Check for any hissing noise around the inlet manifold, throttle body, injection system.

An intermittent problem with the throttle position sensor is possible - but like all intermittent problems it is a devil to track down.

Do the paper clip test just to make sure.

Had the exact same symptoms. Air flow meter was first to be changed and situation improved enormously. After new coolant temperature sensor and new idle control valve, car runs perfectly.

Took the car to specialist garage yesterday and they found no error codes. They seem to think my carb just needs a good clean. Not convinced but I'll give it a go once I get a gasket.

Your 'carb' needs a clean! It doesn't have a carb. Some specialist!

However, if it there are no codes then I'd sugges that you get some carb cleaner (still called carb cleaner!) and clean out the egr valve and the idle control valve. Then see what difference that makes.

Sorry my mistake I used to work on cars many years ago before they had injection systems. Throttle body and idle control valve is in the same place as a carb:thumbs_up:!

Gasget has now arrived, now I have to pick a warmer day to undertake the task!!

I have the same problem, i put some redex in and it seemed to help.
