Hi there,

I wonder if any of you guys can help with a problem I've been experiencing with my Corsa for a little while. Here's my cars spec before I start:

Corsa 1.3 ecoflex (2009) 3dr diesel.

My car is VERY sluggish when I set off in the morning. Granted, it is cold outside at the moment and it is a diesel so I'd expect it to take a little while, but I think there may be a problem :(

As soon as I turn the ignition, the car starts up without any problem, however it seems to sit there and shudder before I set off (the rev's are at about 9000 which I think is normal?). I always make sure the little ignition light goes out before starting up - so it's not that causing the issue.

Anyway, once I set off the car is extremely sluggish to the point where if I floor the accelerator in first gear it takes a good 5 seconds before it starts to gain some pace. There's also a loud 'knocking' sound coming from the engine when at low revs... it's difficult to describe, but sounds like metal on metal? Could this be the pistons (I've had to google the name of them ha... I'm not mechanically minded)? This noise seems to disappear once I've gained a bit of speed or when I'm in a higher gear, and the knocking speeds up the faster I go (I think).

The car seems to 'kick-in' to action once I get past halfway on the rev counter - maybe when the turbo kicks in? And then runs fine when in higher gears. After a 30min drive at 30mph, as soon as I stop the car and start off in first gear, the noise is back (but to a lesser extent and the performance is less sluggish).

Can anyone offer any advice before I take it to a garage? Are there any checks I can do? Is it bad news?

Thanks muchly )

When did you last check the oil level - and what level is the oil showing on the dipstick?

Any metal to metal knocks need to be properly investigated - if you don't know much about cars then to be frank there isn't much advice we can give without being able to see and hear the car. You're probably best taking to your usual garage and ask them to listen to it from cold.

Hi guys,

I've finally taken the car to the Vauxhall garage and they've just rang to say the knocking noise is 'probably' down to the car needing 2 new fuel injectors... at a total price of ÂŁ669 fitted!!!!

As you can imagine, I'm reluctant to spend so much money. Can anyone offer any advice? Could this knocking noise in the engine be related to the fuel injectors?

Thanks
Craig

OK as requested, I've done a video of the knocking noise (filmed this morning - apologies for the quality) - see if you can hear the noise in the background at about 4 seconds in (my phone didn't pick it up great, but you can hear it if you listen a few times).

I can make it happen every time if I accelerate in too high a gear ie. 15mph in 3rd gear.

My girlfriend has a similar problem in terms of sluggishness with her 1.3 ecoflex and found this thread.

I did the pedal test to check for the error code and it came up with nothing. I then took it to a mechanic friend who has a diagnostics reading machine and that too came up with nothing.

He noticed that it was misfiring (the car shaking when revved to about 2000 revs). He then isolated each of the fuel injectors using the diagnostics machine and it was clear that the 4th injector was not working.

He's sorting out all of the fuel injectors later this week; 3 of them cleaned and one replaced with a refurb. The replacement one will cost about ÂŁ150 inc labour.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks gmc1001 - it's good to know I'm not the only one with the issue (sorry)! Does the car have a knocking noise when travelling slow in too high a gear ie. 15mph in 3rd?

I'm gonna have to find myself another garage (not an official vauxhall one) to see what they find. Maybe getting a refurb will do the trick for me. According to the garage, injector 4 is dead and number 3 is on it's way out.

If you can let me know how you get on, I'd be grateful! Thanks

Apologies for going on, but I've been reading up online and wondered if it is normal for fuel injectors to pack in at so low mileage (53000)? My car is only 4 years old and has been serviced 3 times by Vauxhall and once by KwikFit (last year). The majority of miles are motorway miles.

Reckon I'd get anywhere if I went back to Vauxhall and said the car isn't fit for purpose (sale of goods act)? I know it's out of warranty, and can understand things go wrong... but ÂŁ669 worth of work for 2 injectors is surely extreme considering the cars usage! Fair enough tyres / brake pads / discs need replacing due to wear and tear, but fuel injectors?

Also, would redex maybe fix the issue with fuel injectors? Vauxhall advised injector 4 needs replacing and injector 3 is on its way out - reckon it's worth a shot?

Maybe it's time for me to invest in a Haynes manual!?
