Hi,

I recently got the head gasket and timing chain renewed. I took the car for a drive when I stopped for a moment to let people cross the street, it wouldnt go into 1st or 2nd gear, I managed to get the car started in 3rd gear,
While i driving i was then able to get it back into 2nd and 1st again no problems at all.
I took the car back to the garage and they lifted it up while me inside using the gears while they examined it underneath.
The mechanics werent able to find anything wrong with it and it seemed the problem may have corrected itself??
Has anyone ever had this problem before?

It may have been the clutch dragging - if it does it again push the gear lever towards first gear, then holding it there turn the engine off. If it slides into gear when the engine stops then it's likely to be the clutch.

Hoefully just a glitch that's sorted itself out.

I just went for another run in it again seems to be working ok no problems,
Thanks Taurus will give the clutch test a go if it happens again,
on another note, its great to have the head gasket sorted and new timing chain it seems to run better

Could be the clutch release bearing starting to die.

Either it will start making a noise when you press and release the clutch pedal, or you'll get the original problem returning. But it's not unknown for cars that have had work done on them to do silly things straight afterwards, and then sort themselves out. It may even have been something had fallen into the linkages at the workshop and then freed itself and dropped out of the bottom of the engine bay.

The clutch doesn't make a noise when used same as it always was. The mechanic did say it may have just been them working on engine.
