Mini Rant time. Spent 700 getting my car fixed for mot , (nearly half its value) which it passed, and then there was still an issue. Everytime I changed gear and tried to accelerate the car sort of stuttered for a few seconds then took off. After a while the Engine light came on so I took it to the mechanic. There was a bit of oil around the casing of the air filter so i watched him blast that all off and clean it out and took the car for a spin and still the lag was there.
So I left it with him and a week later get a call to say he has replaced the throttle box and air filter meter, another 180 but I couldnt give a monkeys as long as it was going grand. But it wasn't. Was ok for about a day, then the same prob occured and on my way to the gym this morning the engine light came on. Lag when changin gear and accelerating!
It's really getting to me now. I'm actually waiting to phone the guy at 9 and have a go but I don't even know if I have a leg to stand on and I know it's gonna be more money. Taxx is due in 2 weeks too.
Hope no one minds me moaning, ha, and if anyone has any ideas as to what the problem might be, I'd be open to ideas. A grand down the drain in a month for a 06 1.2 sxi :(
Thanks

As far as I am aware he has read the codes. I seen him plug it in so I think he has but he did seem a bit baffled by the whole thing and said that he thinks it may be something to do with the 'brain' of the car. He said he cleared all the faults but wasn't surprised that I was phoning again, I think he is at a loss to explain

If you've got a laptop invest in opcom, read the codes yourself, and post the results here.

It will pay for itself the first time you use it, and you will know first hand what the codes are present, be able to trigger various components independently and monitor live engine data. Otherwise it's just a matter a guesswork.

UPDATE: Got the car back. He said something about the voltage of the fuse just randomly dropping so he had to wire it so it was earthed and this should sort it out. He didn't charge me any more for it cus he said I'd already spent enough.
However after about 30 miles the Engine Management light came on again!!! The car seems to be fine but I'm pretty in tune with it and it does feel a bit like when I hit 50-60 and accelerated sometimes picks up a bit or drops too much. Any ideas guys. It's slowly but surely breaking me:( financially and emotionally, ha

As this is a facelift corsa C, can you not do the pedal test on it and find out the codes yourself for free.

Get in car, pressdown brake pedal and throttle pedal at the same time. With them both pressed down, put key in and turn it to ignition (just ACC, dont start the car). The spanner light on the dash will start to flash out the codes to you. For example, code P0110 would flash out as 10 short flashes, then a gap, then 1 short flash, a gap, 1 short flash, a gap and then 10 short flashes. This is because 0's are represented by flashing 10 times.

Note down the flashes and report back what codes it tells you.

To me this sounds like lambda sensor issues, but the issue is that a LOT of things on these engines cause roughly the same symptoms, rough running, jerky acceleration, poor start, all those things can be caused by almost every sensor one way or another.

Do the pedal test and see what codes are being reported.

Ive had 2 cars do the same thing, 1 was a seat and it was the temp sensor, the other was a corsa and it was the lamba sensor, almost definately sounds like a faulty sensor

Is a lamda sensor the air flow meter? Because that is what he has already replaced, also would that be an expensive job and also will this test work of the engine management light has now went off but the fault is still there?

No its not, the air flow meter, as its name suggests, measures or meters a volume of air entering the engine. The lambda sensor is effectively an oxygen sensor, for determining the amount of oxygen, and hence fuel that is ejected from the cylinders, into the exhaust. The lambda sensor lives mounted in the exhaust, usually on the manifold, sometimes further down the exhaust system.

It's easy to replace, especially for a garage, but buying a proper vaux one will set you back some. Try finding a bosch one on ebay, or if you fancy it, you can get dirt cheap "universal" ones, but i wouldnt recommend that as you're trying to eliminate faults, not introduce more by using crappy products.

Dave.

*EDIT* - and yes, although the light is now off, the ecu SHOULD still have recorded the code, even if its currently inactive, it will be classed as an archived code and should still flash out along with any active codes in the memory of the ecu.

Thanks man, the advice is generous and much appreciated. Hopefully somewhere down the line I'll be able to give someone a hand, I'll let you know how it goes
