New alloys

Hi there.

Loved reading about changing std rims to alloys.

Son has got Merit b 1.2 and wants to upgrade, however we physically do not have the car to hand so I cannot see std tyre size.

What are the std size tyres, so that I can work out the correct alloy size, or does anybody know the alloys sizes and tyres I can use without changing anything regards bodywork scraping etc.

Regards

Measuring alloy wheels and choosing tyres to fit.

Couple of fun facts to mention.

The PCD of 100mm refers to the centre to centre measurement of the stud holes to the hole opposite - Not the next one around - which will measure about 71mm.

The rim width - is measured from inside edge of wheel to inside edge opposite. a 99 corsa b 1.2 has 5.5 inches rim width as standard - refered to as 5.5j - I'm sorry - I don't know what the j refers to. (anyone know ?)

Take a look at http://www.raceandroad.com/technical-help/wheel-size.html to see where to measure.

There will be a limit on how wide the rims can go before they do one of three bad things.
a) Rub against the suspension (bad for wear and noise)
b) protrude from the wheel arches - illegal in the UK
c) upset the steering and suspension geometry - you exceed the ET or Offset mentioned above.

Lastly - how to measure the wheel diameter. If you measure from edge to edge - you will be about 1" in error. The easiest way I know is to wrap a tape measure around the perimeter of the rolling edge of the wheel - where the smallest diamter of the tyre will seat. Divide this measurement (in inches) by 3.14159 (Pi) - and you get the wheel diameter. So a 13" rim - will measure about 14" edge to edge (but some vary) and around the perimeter you should find 40.8 inches (or 40 & 3/4" close enough).

Table of Wheel - perimeters and rim sizes below. (not the tyres - they are not on the rims yet)

Perimeter Diameter
31.4 10.0
37.7 12.0
40.8 13.0
44.0 14.0
47.1 15.0
50.3 16.0
53.4 17.0
56.5 18.0
59.7 19.0
62.8 20.0
66.0 21.0
69.1 22.0

To Pick your final tyre size - you want to keep the rolling perimeter of the tyre as close to the standard one as possible - keeps the speedo accurate and gear ratios as originally intended.

This site works well
http://www.kouki.co.uk/utilities/visual-tyre-size-calculator

As an example - if you have the commonly fitted 155 x 70 R 13 tyres - and change to 15inch diameter wheels -the closest match I believe is something like 195 x 45 R 15 - which ideally needs a rim width between 6.5" and 7.5"

To see which rim width matches which tread width - check out
http://customwheelsmarket.com/rimwheelwidth1.html.

Remember - if you change the tread width - you also need to adjust the profile to keep the rolling perimeter the same length (and speedo and gear ratios correct) . You rarely get it exact, aim to keep the error to less than (1 or 1.5) mph.
(Unless you don't mind or even desire - inaccurate speedo and different gear ratios :) )

Love the site
