Since ive had a new engine (1.6 16v) put in, i was told that the engine would burn some oil at first. But its been a while now and it seems to be burning more and more. Is this just an effect of changing an engine or is it the engine itself just burning oil?

Secondly, ive also noticed that the revs can sometimes be erratic. Sometimes when i put my clutch in the revs increase by 400 or so for a few seconds, and occasionally it idles at 1,500 - 2,000. The garage apparently reset everything on the engine when it was changed, and it was all fine until now.

Thanks for again helping me with my ever growing list of probs!

Mark.

Is the over-revving just when you first start it up?

Most of the 1.6 16v's do burn oil but if it's excessive then it could be the valve stem seals IIRC.

it revs at about 1,200 when i first start it up, but then it eventually settles at 800rpm, i know thats normal for these engines.

Yeah that's just your choke on. It will do that for the first 5mins or so just while it warms up. Usually in this time and for a few mins after you will find your revs pick up when you dip the clutch.
