Over the next few months I am planning to try and spray a few of the rust spots and scuffs on my corsa, as I can't afford a respray at present, has anyone any tips for trying this?

I've experience of spraying using cans in a previous job, but I've never sprayed a car,

Basically I will be sanding the area, filling if necessary then using primer followed by the final coats,

my main concerns are:-

firstly that the rust will come back through or still spread, and how long this will take to happen

secondly if using something like t-cut will I have to avoid the repaired areas

thirdly how close will the match be for a 7 year old car, will there be much of a difference due to sun fade etc,

I think it is Alantis Blue, but I will obviously check this properly before spraying,

sorry for the long post

Well if you sand it down fully and get rid of all the rust, you can use some acid stripper stuff that get rid of all the rust, dont ask me what its called, someone on here will know. But if you get rid of it properly it shouldn't come back.

You should be fine to T-cut it after its been sprayed.

The colour match is always a problem for an older car, mine is 13 years old and atlantis blue, i sprayed up some mirrors for mine and the colour match it pretty good. As you can see from this piccy:

Ive got to do all my rust soon, and spray up my bumpers and arches

thanks for that, looks great, a five door too =o)

I like the mirrors, might try that, I'm lucky enough to have body coloured bumpers, it looks great with decent wheels, I'm stuck with steel ones at the momoent

if you are doing the Rust make sure you go approximately an inch around it to stop it spreading, sand it down, filler it if needed, then primer, then spray
also t-cutting will be able to be done all over as you will need to t-cut the sprayed area to merge the colour ;)
colour match can be alright mine is 13 years and if you go to my project thread ive done my boot lock surround :)

When I had a new bonnet resprayed, the colour looked fine in comparison to the whole car. Paint match is great! Plus I'd given it a good polish beforehand anyway.

thanks for the replies and tips, they've put the worries to rest, I didn't fancy starting it if it was all going to fail, but it sounds a good project for the next few months,

I like your project threads, they've given me a few ideas for when I have some spare pennies:)

I used to drive an Astra 1.8 SXI and my last car was an Escort 1.8 Gti which I got rid of when my wee son came along, so we now have a family Corolla 1.8 and I have my wee Corsa 1.0 LS as a wee run about/project car now, so I'm looking forward to messing about on it, :)

got any pics of ya corsa mate?
gonna make a project thread for us all to keep an eye on?
I'll try and get some over the weekend it's just a bog standard 5 door just now but I'll try and give it a wee polish hehe,

the project thread sounds a good idea, although it'll take an absolute age by the time I save up for stuff hehe, I'll try it as a budget one and see how cheap I can do it:thumbs_up:
