Sounds like a dumb question but how do I know whether my steering rack needs replacing? It failed mot because the mechanic said it's 'excessively tough when turning" If it does I got a quote for £170 does that seem about right?

They don't usually get "tough" when knackered, rather the opposite in fact, they tend to get sloppy, with excess movement of the steering wheel before the road wheels actually turn.
The can also get noisy and the rack rattles in the bushes.

As you've not posted which model/year, I'm going to guess and say you have a Corsa C (2000 - 2006)
These models have electric power steering rather than hydraulic, a big electric motor aids the steering column (it's part of the column)
They are noted to fail, a torque sensor measures your input, then aids the turn in that direction, if it's out of alignment this can cause a pull to one side or it weighting up more one way more than the other, left OR right.
If it's failed/failing, it will be both ways, left AND right.

But it could also need the column replacing if it's heavy in both directions.

Thanks for the reply, yes it's a Corsa c 2003 1.0l 12v. Also I was meant to say "rough" not "tough" yes there is excessive movement of the steering wheel left and right and it's quite clunky and noisy. Gonna get the rack replaced hopefully that should solve that issue.

Get the inner tie rods and track rod ends checked first.
The tie rods and track rod ends have ball joints that can introduce free play in the steering.

Will do, if it is my steering rack which needs replacing i'll do that.
A bit off the subject now... my MOT failed on
steering rack excessively rough and nearside inner and outer cv joint gaiter split.
Ive been quoted £250 to get the whole lot done that includes parts and labour. Would you say that is a fair average price or am i being taken for a mug.
