Warning things not to do with Multimeters, or volt and amp meters.
1. Never put your meter "across" a battery of any size with it on any of the ohms settings.
2. Never put your meter "across" a battery of any size with it on amps or milli amp setting

Both the about, at best you will blow a fuse in the meter, at worst you will fry the meter.
Volt measurements are done in Parallel i.e. across the battery
Amp or milli amp measurements are do "in series" with the load
Ohm meter reading or any type of continuity testing uses the power in the multimeter (internal battery) so any external power supply like a car battery should be disconnected if doing the tests on a vehicle.
When you have the meter on amps you have essentially got a dead short in your hands, via the test leads.
