I need a new Coolant temperature sensor that activates the fan on my 1.2 8v 1996 corsa. The engine is x12sz 19823045.

I've already brought both of these sensors;

Both of which don't fit

Looking at my sensor it appears to be much larger than any on the web

if its the sensor in the rad, it should be a 2 pin one, same as most vauxhalls. get to the breakers and "purchase" a few.

The sensor that activates you fan is called the fan cooling switch. You're buying the wrong thing!

The big green one tells the ECU how hot the engine is, not sure on the blue one.

Sensor installed

I installed this sensor;

Turned it on heated it up. It was just shy of red on the temperature gauge, then I decided to turn it off out of fear of breaking the engine. Fan still didn't come on though

If I bridge the lead going to the temperature sensor the fan will rotate.

Any idea's what's wrong guys?

Just sounds like you didn't leave it long enough. The gauge can get very close or even slightly into the red before the fan kicks in on Corsas. If you've bridged the sensor and the fan kicks in then it is obviously that sensor that needed replacing so you've bought the right one. Just give it another shot and be more patient with the engine temp this time and the fan should kick in.

What nibnob21 says is usually the case with Corsas. The fan doesn't run until the gauge very nearly reaches the red area. So chances are that's the case.

However just be aware that if the radiator is clogged, or if there is an obstruction in the coolant flow, then sometimes the hot coolant isn't reaching the radiator fan switch so it won't trigger the fan.

You could try flushing the system to make sure there's no blockages. Flush the radiator with the coolant fan switch removed to make sure water is flowing freely around that area.

One other thing to check is the water pump. On the 8v engines I always replace the pump every 40k (when I do a belt) because they don't last for ever. If it is an old one the impeller vanes can corrode away so you get very limited coolant flow.

Can you be blaming me for being scared though? I think one head gasket replacement is enough!
