Car seeming to skid when cornering?!

Hi all,

There's a strange characteristic of my steering that I've noticed lately, especially when wet. Obviously, a car taken too fast around a corner will lose grip and skid- but even at low speed (15mph?!) mine seems to be doing just that- the steering goes a lot lighter and sometimes there is even a slight juddering as if the tyres are fighting for grip.

Any ideas? The tracking was done recently and all tyres on the car are fairly new , so there's not a grip issue due to the tyres being low on tread... Didn't know if something may need adjusting in front suspension/steering setup to make sure everything is working properly.

If I was a fast driver I'd put it down to simply driving too fast, but I don't!

Oh, and it's running on standard suspension and 13" steel wheels btw :)

Budget tyres ? Is it only one side that skids out?

Hi Vegas. Not cheap tyres no, Pirelli P3000s- I was under the impression they're good! Haha.

And skids slightly on both sides- when going around a roundabout the right side will lose grip when entering the roundabout, then the left as you go around, then the right again when exiting. It's not always THAT bad, but it's very weird! If I took it fast enough I reckon there's a chance it'd lose grip much more and understeer!

Doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with your car to be honest. Like Hardcore said, when it rains at this time of year the roads become very slippery, more so than when it rains in colder weather as a greasy film materialises on the surface of the tarmac when it's been warm. The standard 13" steelies on Corsas are very narrow and so the actual contact area the wheels have with the road is relatively small and so the grip isn't great.

I have two brand new Michelins on the front of my Corsa on the 13" steelies and mine slipped slightly on a roundabout today at a relatively low speed. Just how it is.

I'd say your options are this: get some wider wheels for more grip or just slow down and be more cautious.

There's a tiny mini-roundabout near me with a sharp turn, if it's wet there's a good chance I'll skid and understeer on it even at normal speeds so I have to take it really slow. Don't seem to have much of a problem anywhere else, on 13s with 5-6mm of tread left.

It does occasionally get a bit of wheelspin at junctions and lights too, which can make you look a right tit when you're not expecting it (Especially in a 1.0 :palm:).

God I hate that. I was pulling out of a car park the other day, and INFORNT of my parents, the inside wheel hit a puddle and squeeled! They gave me a right talking to at home lol!

Lol, thanks for the replies guys! At least I know I'm not the only one ;) I am intending to get some alloys soon, so that'll probably solve the problem :) I've never actually got much wheelspin from mine, although I did when pulling out in a short gap at a local roundabout, making a very loud squeal as I left- felt like a bit of a fool :/ And when I had a car full of mates in the wet, the extra weight and a short gap meant that all I got when pulling out was a bouncy wheelspin from the front end! Annoying as a 1.0 needs all the grip it can get when pulling out!

i have 7j alloys on mine and going to work the other day and on a straight road i felt i was on ice, was quite scary but then turned onto another really windy road and it was fine, was very strange lol

but this explanation of the chemicals makes sense now, is that why when its really hot it looks like there's a huge puddle in the disctance but then nothing there lol

pirelli p3000's are crap. they slide badly in the wet. i swapped mine a week after getting them.

Stop ripping the handbrake up - that fixed it for me
